Serena Williams begins French Open with victory over Kristie Ahn

Share

Serena Williams began the French Open on a winning note after recording victory over compatriot Kristie Ahn.

The 39-year-old is still in the hunt for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title after a couple of near-misses in recent years.

Williams was recently eliminated from the US Open after suffering a disappointing loss to Victoria Azarenka in the semi-finals.

However, she put up an impressive performance at Roland Garros to defeat fellow American Ahn.

Despite starting on a slow note, she up her game during the encounter and coasted to a 7-6 (7-3) 6-0 win in Paris.

Should she ultimately win the tournament, there are a series of records that she will break in the process.

First, she will equal Australian Margaret Court's long-standing record of 24 Grand Slam title wins.

Also, the American superstar will become only the fourth mother ever to win a Grand Slam in the history of the sport.

Williams is, however, set to face Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova in the second round of the 2020 French Open.
