Serena Williams reaches US Open quarter-finals after win over Maria Sakkari

Share

Tennis star Serena Williams has progressed to the quarter-finals of the US Open after beating Maria Sakkari.

The six-time champion had to do it the hard way before overcoming her 15th-seeded Greek opponent.

Williams won the game after three sets which last for almost two hours, with wins of  6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-3.

"I just kept fighting. She was doing so well. She was being so aggressive and I knew I needed to do the same thing,” she said after the game.

"The breaks are a bit longer with the fans here. I could have used that a little bit in this match."

The 38-year-old is seeking to win her 24th grand slam title, which will see her equal the record of Margaret Court.

Until now, that record-breaking feat has proved elusive, but Williams could inch closer to it with a win over Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova in the next round.

Pironkova advanced to the quarter-finals after recording victory over French world number 56 Alize Cornet.
