Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui wins a second New York title, while Lesotho's Kamohelo Mofolo podiums and Sweden's Andreas Almgren stuns on debut.
Sheila Chepkirui is a two-time New York City Marathon champion. The Kenyan won the women's race on Sunday to claim her second title in the Big Apple, and she did it on one of the toughest stages in distance running. Another big win for Kenya, and another reminder of how African runners dominate the roads.
USA's Jessica McClain took second place in the women's race, finishing as the top American on the podium.
The men's race had its own shock. Sweden's Andreas Almgren won on his marathon debut, stopping the clock at 2:06:01 after a strong career over the half marathon and the 10,000m. He broke away from Italy's Yemaneberhan Crippa in the final mile and held on to win by 13 seconds.
There was also a big result for African fans in the men's race. Lesotho's Kamohelo Mofolo finished third, edging out defending champion Benson Kipruto of Kenya in a tight finish. A podium finish in New York is a major moment for Mofolo and for Lesotho.
Chepkirui reclaims her crown, Almgren announces himself as a marathoner, and Mofolo puts Lesotho on the New York podium. It was a great day on the streets of the five boroughs.
