Ben Shelton has recruited Juan Carlos Ferrero, the man who helped build Carlos Alcaraz into a champion, and the move could reshape the chase for the top.
Ben Shelton has made one of the boldest moves of the tennis off-season: he has brought in Juan Carlos Ferrero, the coach who guided Carlos Alcaraz to world No. 1 and multiple Grand Slam titles. The American now has the Spaniard's blueprint for beating the best in his corner.
The fit makes sense on paper. Shelton brings a huge lefty serve, raw athleticism and fearless shot-making, but consistency across long tournaments and the tactical polish to solve elite opponents are what separate contenders from champions. Ferrero, himself a former world No. 1 and French Open winner, has spent years refining exactly those qualities in a young superstar.
There is a fascinating subplot too. Ferrero knows Alcaraz's game, habits and pressure points better than almost anyone, which gives Shelton a rare inside track on one of his biggest obstacles. Tennis coaching is never just about copying a rival's secrets, but that kind of insight is valuable when Grand Slam margins are so thin.
The challenge is turning the partnership into results. Shelton will need to buy into new routines, sharpen his shot selection and keep his explosive style under control when matches get tight. If it clicks, the ex-coach could end up making life very difficult for his former protégé.
