Diana Shnaider ends British number one Katie Boulter's Wuhan Open campaign at the first hurdle.
Katie Boulter's Wuhan Open ended almost as soon as it began. Britain's top-ranked player was beaten in the first round by Russia's Diana Shnaider.
For Boulter, an early exit on the hard courts of China is a frustrating result at one of the biggest stops on the WTA calendar. As British number one she arrived with expectations, but Shnaider handled the occasion better and moved into the next round.
Shnaider, one of the sharpest young left-handers on tour, keeps her tournament alive and will now turn her attention to the second round. Her ability to take down a seeded name early will give her confidence as the draw tightens.
Boulter must regroup quickly. The tour moves on fast, and there are more ranking points to chase in the weeks ahead. Wuhan was a chance to build momentum, but she will have to find it elsewhere.
