Spencer Dinwiddie’s to help charity after long-shot crowdfunding campaign flops

The ex-Detroit Pistons guard Spencer Dinwiddie shocked the basketball world when he created a GoFundMe page that would allow fans to make a financial donation in order to help him decide his next NBA team.

If the goal of raising $24, 632, 630 was met, the fans would have determined the 27-year-old’s next destination and he would have signed a one-year deal with that team. However, if the fundraising fell short, Dinwiddie would have donated all the money to charity.

But Dinwiddie failed to meet the mark, and Ian Begley of SNY, reports that Dinwiddie was already expecting the campaign to flop.

“One person close to Dinwiddie that I talked to said, ‘Hey, I think he knows he’s not getting anywhere near this goal and he’s just having fun. He just wants to raise some money.”

As promised, Dinwiddie however had no other option than to donate all funds raised, an amount of $1,150 he received during his short-lived GoFundMe campaign to ReadWorks, an organization that “supports remote learning efforts for teachers and students during COVID-19.”

Dinwiddie is under contract with the Nets until after next season and he’s expected to hit free agency in 2021.

Before the NBA stopped play due to the coronavirus pandemic, Dinwiddie had been one of the few bright spots on a sluggish Nets team, averaging 20.6 points and 6.8 assists per game as he took over for the injured Kyrie Irving as the team’s focal point on offense.
