Sporting Lagos FA Clinches 2024 Gothia Cup Title With Dominant Victory Over FC Tokyo

Sporting Lagos FA triumphed over FC Tokyo with a 4-0 victory in the final of the 2024 Gothia Cup (U17 Category) held in Sweden.

This victory marks a significant achievement for the Nigerian club, which made its debut in the prestigious tournament this year.

The match saw early goals from Yusuf Abdullahi and Tunde Akomolede, setting the tone for Sporting Lagos’s commanding performance.

Abdullahi opened the scoring in the 8th minute, swiftly followed by Akomolede’s strike just three minutes later, doubling the lead.

In the second half, John Lucky sealed the win with a remarkable brace, netting goals in the 54th and 59th minutes. His efforts ensured that FC Tokyo had no chance of staging a comeback, solidifying Sporting Lagos’s dominance throughout the match.

Babatunde Akomolede’s exceptional performance throughout the tournament earned him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, further highlighting the talent within the Sporting Lagos squad.

“I just tried to use the opportunity I had, and it turned out I used it well,” Babatunde Akomolede said about his goal.

Sporting Lagos’s journey to the final was marked by a thrilling 5-4 victory over fellow Nigerian club Beyond Limits in the semifinals, showcasing their resilience and determination.

With this victory, Sporting Lagos FA becomes the latest Nigerian club to win the Gothia Cup, adding their name to the list of champions as the tournament approaches its 50th anniversary.
