Harry Brook smashed a record 202, but Sri Lanka still hunted down 430 to beat England by two wickets in an ODI for the ages.
Sri Lanka have pulled off one of the great one-day heists, chasing down a mammoth 430 to beat England by two wickets in a match that rewrote the ODI record books.
It was heartbreak for Harry Brook, who played a record-breaking innings of 202 and still finished on the losing side. A knock of that size normally decides a game. This time the other side had an answer.
The early signs gave little hint of the fireworks to come. England crawled to 5-0 after three overs, with Ben Duckett lucky to survive a run-out chance when he was just short of his ground and Arachchige's throw bounced past the stumps. Jacob Bethell's opening partner Banton managed only one big shot in that stretch, and the cover fielder stopped it. Sri Lanka's bowlers hit an excellent length, and England looked content to read the pitch before swinging freely.
From that cautious start came a run-fest that ended with the chasing side celebrating an unlikely win. Sri Lanka showed nerve and ambition over a very long evening, and the result will be talked about for years as one of the biggest chases the format has seen.
