Harry Brook smashed the fastest double hundred in ODI history, but Sri Lanka still hunted down a monster target with a Liyanage six and one ball to spare.
Harry Brook did something no one has ever done in one-day cricket and still walked off a loser. The England captain blasted the fastest ODI double hundred on record, finishing with 202, only to watch Sri Lanka chase down a colossal 430 in Rawalpindi.
It was a wild, twist-filled night. Sri Lanka were wobbling at 24 for two when the chase began, and the target looked miles out of reach. Then Pavan Rathnayake, Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka took over and turned the innings on its head.
Rathnayake led the way with 130, while Fernando fell three short of a century on 97. Shanaka matched that score and was the most ferocious of the three, smashing eight sixes in an innings that doubled as payback after his bowling had been hammered earlier in the day.
Liyanage finished it in style, clearing the rope for a six with one ball to spare. The result is the second-highest successful chase in ODI history, behind only the legendary 438 game from 20 years ago. Brook's record knock will be remembered, but this night belongs to Sri Lanka.
