A 14-year-old has come forward to West Midlands Police after Coventry City launched an investigation into a video taunting Sunderland fans.
A 14-year-old boy has handed himself in to West Midlands Police after a video appeared to show a supporter taunting Sunderland fans with a picture of Bradley Lowery. The clip sparked immediate outrage and prompted Coventry City to open their own investigation.
Bradley was the young Sunderland supporter whose battle with neuroblastoma touched football fans around the world before he died in 2017, aged just six. His friendship with striker Jermain Defoe made him a beloved figure well beyond Wearside, so any mockery linked to his memory cuts deep.
Coventry said they were looking into the footage once it surfaced, and the teenager's decision to approach police marks a significant step in the matter. Police have not set out what will happen next, and the case remains in the hands of the authorities.
For many in the game, the episode is a stark reminder that rivalry has limits. Banter between supporters is part of football's fabric, but targeting a child who lost his life to cancer is a line that clubs and fans on all sides have been quick to condemn.
