Two suspects are in custody after the death of 22-year-old Fabulous Ladies player Agartha Takyiwa, a case that renews safety concerns for African women in sport.
The killing of 22-year-old Fabulous Ladies footballer Agartha Takyiwa has shaken Ghana's women's game and renewed urgent questions about the safety of African women athletes who work outside the pitch to survive. Two suspects have now been arrested in Techiman in connection with her alleged murder, according to head coach Nana Atuahene.
Takyiwa was attacked on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at Afrancho in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region. She worked as a commercial tricycle operator, known locally as a pragya. Atuahene said she picked up a female passenger around 22:30 GMT and was heading toward Afrancho New Site when the attack happened.
She reportedly struggled with the assailants over her tricycle and was stabbed multiple times in the thigh, stomach and neck. The attackers then fled with the vehicle and her mobile phone. The location of the stolen phone allegedly led to the suspects being traced to Techiman, where they were arrested.
Takyiwa had been preparing for the 2026/27 Women's Division One League season. Her story is a reminder of how many women footballers across the continent balance the game with demanding, sometimes dangerous, side jobs. Atuahene also said the club had yet to formally notify the Ghana Football Association of the incident.
The suspects are still presumed innocent until the courts rule. For now, Takyiwa's club, teammates and family are mourning a young player whose life was cut short far too soon.
