Oleksandr Usyk wants one last run at cruiserweight, and David Benavidez is the opponent his camp has in mind before he hangs up the gloves.
Oleksandr Usyk is plotting a final chapter, and it could take him back to where his legend began. According to his adviser, the former undisputed heavyweight champion is eyeing a return to cruiserweight for a showdown with David Benavidez before he retires from boxing.
The idea carries real symmetry. Usyk built his reputation at 200 pounds, where he became a champion of the division and set the standard for skill, footwork and ring IQ. Going back down in weight for a last big night would let him close his career at the place that made his name.
Benavidez would bring a very different test. He is known as an aggressive, high-volume puncher who pressures opponents relentlessly, which sets up a clash of styles. Usyk's movement and tactical control would meet Benavidez's power and forward march.
Nothing has been officially announced, and the talk so far comes from Usyk's side. Still, a fight between two elite names with a retirement storyline attached would be one of the more compelling matchups on the boxing calendar, and fans will be watching for the next move.
