Victor Osimhen dedicates best Ligue 1 African player award to late father

Lille striker Victor Osimhen has dedicated his Marc Vivien Foe best Ligue 1 African player award for the 2019-20 season to his late father.

The Nigerian forward named the 2020 winner of Prix Marc-Vivien Foé, the award given to the Best African player in Ligue 1 in a season.

Osimhen, who lost his father last month at the age of 80, has taken to social media to dedicate the award to him while also applauding other nominees.

“[I am] grateful to God almighty, I dedicate this amazing award to my late father. Thanks to those who voted for me and also a big shout out goes to Moses Simon and the rest of the nominees. Thank you once more,” Osimhen tweeted.

The 21-year-old striker beat his compatriot Moses Simon who also had a good season with Nantes.

He is now only the second Nigerian to win the award since its inception in 2009 after former Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama who won it in 2014.

Osimhen joined Lille last summer from Belgian club Sporting Charleroi.

His performances have also been rewarded as he won the Lille’s Player of the Year award and was included in Ligue 1’s Team of the Season.
