Wan-Bissaka Commits to DR Congo, Earns First Senior Call-Up

West Ham United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka has chosen to represent the Democratic Republic of Congo and has been called up to the national team ahead of June’s international window.

Wan Bissaka on Thursday was handed a first-call up by head coach Sebastien Desabre in his 27-man squad for next month’s international friendlies against Mali and Madagascar, respectively.

The 27-year-old, born in England to Congolese parents, previously made one appearance for DR Congo’s under-20 team in 2015 before returning to represent England at both the U20 and U21 levels.

The Leopards will take on the Eagles of Mali on 5 June before battling Madagascar’s Barea on 8 June, with both games expected to take place at Stade de la Source in Orleans, France.

Wan-Bissaka, meanwhile, is included in a star-studded squad, with Desabre inviting regulars like Arthur Masuaku and Chancel Mbembe in defence, midfielders Theo Bongonda and Meschak Elia, as well as forwards Yoane Wissa and Cedric Bakambu.
