Who would’ve thought that the 4th smallest country in Africa could deliver one memorable performance in AFCON history. Despite only being recognized by FIFA in 2005, Comoros and ranking 132nd in the world, surprisingly stunned Ghana for an early stage exit.
Another thing to rejoice is that Comoros debut scored their first ever AFCON goal through El Fardou Ben Nabouhane in the early start of the match and has since held until crowned victors. They stayed relentless even after leading a 2-0 despite Ghana being down to 10 players from the 25th minute.
Comoros now needs to have the next games on Wednesday and Thursday in their favor, in hopes of securing one of the last two-third place qualifying spots. Their upset win now becomes a beacon that they mean business.
“What we have done is already historic, brilliant,” Said Ali Athoumane, president of the Comoros Football Federation, told reporters.
“We were a little more liberated, more relaxed. We had nothing to lose, and now we have to hold onto hope because mathematically, it is still possible.”
