Gerald Asamoah flies over 40 German heart specialists to Ghana for annual free heart surgeries

Former Germany international, Gerald Asamoah, has flown 40 top surgeons to Ghana for his annual free heart surgeries for children with hole-in-heart conditions.

Championed by the Gerald Asamoah Foundation, the surgeries are set to take place at the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC) due to the foundation’s partnership with UGMC’s Cardiothoracic Department.

This is the second edition of the pediatric surgeries for children. In the first edition, he sponsored the surgeries of twenty children in November 2023.

The doctors will spend a few days in Ghana to perform the procedure on the selected children before returning to Germany.

The team of surgeons arrived at the Kotoko International Airport, expressing their excitement about the opportunity to contribute to the well-being of Ghanaian children.

Founder of the Gerald Asamoah Foundation and Ex-German footballer, Gerald Asamoah has flown in over 40 heart specialists and nurses into the country ahead of his annual open heart surgery program.

The annual event is an initiative to offer free surgeries to the underprivileged.

Asamoah, who is also of Ghanaian descent, chose to represent the German national team during his football career and played for renowned clubs such as Schalke and FC St. Pauli.

Now, he is leveraging his influence and resources to positively impact Ghana’s healthcare landscape, demonstrating a commitment to philanthropy and community welfare.

In 2016,  Asamoah accepted the FIFA Fair Play award on behalf of all football organisations supporting refugees during the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala 2015 at the Kongresshaus in Zurich.

His career spent most of his time in Germany playing for Hanover, Greuther Furth and Schalke O4.

The Gerald Asamoah Heart Foundation aims to support children with heart disease in Ghana.

The beneficiaries of the 2024 open-heart surgery program have been selected.
