Ademola Lookman has been voted Atalanta Player Of The Year for the 2023/24 season after the Super Eagles attacker had his best-ever campaign as a footballer.
Atalanta confirmed Lookman as the winner of the top individual award on Thursday via a post on X with the Serie A club accompanying it with the video of his goals.
“Your Player of The Season 2023/24 is once again @Alookman_Look… who won the @italianoptic #POTS AGAIN!,” Atalanta wrote.
“A superb campaign, goals, assists and hat-trick in the Europa League final. Huge congratulations, Ademola and thanks for a very special season.”
Lookman’s impressive season has positioned him as a leading candidate for the 2024 African Player of the Year award.
He has shown courage and perseverance as a journeyman in Europe, eventually finding a home in Bergamo, Italy.
Beginning his career at Charlton Athletic, Lookman had subsequent stints at Everton and RB Leipzig before going on loan to Fulham and Leicester City.
The Nigerian international settled down pretty quickly at Atalanta in his first season and was even much more equipped for the second.
The 26-year-old scored 17 times in 45 appearances for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, following up on his 15 goals in the 2022/23 campaign.
Lookman became the third Nigerian player to score in a Europa League or UEFA Cup final, netting a hat-trick in Atalanta’s 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen.
His glorious hat-trick secured Atalanta their first European trophy, which is only the second honor in their history.
There are rumors that Lookman might leave Atalanta before the end of the summer transfer window. Media reports suggest that Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United are keen on signing him and are prepared to meet Atalanta’s €60 million valuation.
