The basketball world is mourning the loss of NBA legend Jerry West, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86.
West, who was the inspiration for the NBA logo, had a storied career as a player and executive, winning an NBA championship, an Olympic gold medal, and earning 14 All-Star selections.
West’s impact on the game was immense, and his legacy extends far beyond his playing career. He was a three-time Hall of Famer, and his silhouette is still used as the NBA’s logo, earning him the nickname “The Logo.”

He was a general manager for eight NBA championship teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers, where he helped build the “Showtime” dynasty.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued a statement paying tribute to West as “a basketball genius and a defining figure in our league for more than 60 years.”
Silver praised West’s competitive spirit, saying “He distinguished himself not only as an NBA champion and an All-Star in all 14 of his playing seasons, but also as a consummate competitor who embraced the biggest moments.”
West’s passing was met with an outpouring of tributes from across the sports world.
Miami Heat President Pat Riley, who played with and worked with West during their time together as Los Angeles Lakers, said “We can only hope there is someone we meet during a crucial time in our lives that will change you in ways you could dream about. Jerry was that person for me.”
LeBron James, who had a close relationship with West, offered his condolences on social media, saying “Will truly miss our convos my dear friend! My thoughts and prayers goes out to your wonderful family! Forever love Jerry! Rest in Paradise my guy!”

The reason Jerry West is the logo for the NBA is because he embodied the qualities we admire in our best athletes: skills as a player, dedication as a teammate, and integrity as a person. He was my coach, and my advisor, but mostly he was my friend. Today, a part of the continent… pic.twitter.com/oUOxelWavo
