Nikola Jokic surpasses the Congolese, Dikembe Mutombo, in total rebounds in the Nuggets’ franchise history

With his incredible performance over the last few games, Nikola Jokic reached another milestone in his career. He reached the top 3 players with most rebounds in the Nuggets’ franchise history. After the opening game for 2022 against the Houston Rockets, the Serbian now has 4,840 rebounds.

He surpassed the legendary Nugget, Dikembe Mutombo, who had 4,811 rebounds in his 5-year career for the team. The Congolese played in the NBA between 1991 and 2009. He is an 8-time NBA All-Star and won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year four times.

Mutombo wore №55 which has been retired by the Denver Nuggets out of respect for the following the fantastic 5-year spell in Colorado. The center started off his career in the NBA exactly with this team in 1991. He went on to receive his recognition as a one of the best defensive players in the NBA.

The Congolese got the chance to prove his worth in 1994 when the Nuggets reached the Playoffs. He was the main reason for one of the greatest upsets in the NBA Playoffs’ history.

The Nuggets came back after falling 2-0 in the First Round series against the top favorites, the Seattle SuperSonics. In the last game, they outlasted the SuperSonics, 98-94 OT, in the Seattle Coliseum court. Dikembe Mutombo remains the leader for his team in total blocks with 1,486 – an achievement that may not be beaten ever.

Ahead of him remains Byron Beck with 5,261 rebounds who is most likely to be moved from the second spot by the end of the season. Dan Issel tops the leaderboard with 6,630 rebounds which is a record that will be beaten as well, if Jokic extends his contract with the Nuggets in 2023.
