Ulrich Chomche Makes History as First Prospect to be Drafted Directly from NBA Academy Africa

After showcasing his defensive ability and offensive potential in the Basketball Africa League, Cameroonian big man Ulrich Chomche was chosen 57th overall by the Toronto Raptors in the 2024 NBA draft on Thursday.

Chomche is the youngest prospect in the draft and the first prospect to be drafted directly from the NBA academy of Africa. Chomche is a 6’11 225 pound center and Toronto is looking to develop and mold this young man into an NBA big man.

Scouting Report

Chomche made a name for himself in the G League Showcase, catching the attention of NBA scouts with his impressive physical abilities, strong defensive skills, and potential for shooting, ball-handling, and passing.

Although he comes from the NBA Global Academy and there are some doubts about his readiness for the NBA, he could be an attractive prospect for patient teams looking for long-term potential.

Since Chomche has mainly played basketball in Africa rather than in college or well-known European leagues, he is considered a wildcard in the 2024 NBA draft.

However, he has had opportunities to showcase his talents on bigger stages such as the 2023 World Cup qualifiers, the Nike Hoop Summit, and the NBA Draft Combine.

During the Nike Hoop Summit, Chomche stood out by leading all players with three blocks while playing for Team World. This performance drew attention and praise from ESPN’s Leonard Solms.

Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Wasserman compares Chomche to Serge Ibaka, a one-time NBA champion, a three-time NBA All-Defensive Team selection, and a two-time NBA blocks leader. He was selected in the first round of the 2008 NBA draft by the then-Seattle SuperSonics.

Like Chomche, Ibaka started his playing career in Africa. If Chomche follows in Ibaka’s footsteps, the Raptors will have struck gold.
