Abdi Bashir Jr. Named CAA Player of the Week

Monmouth University Men's Basketball sophomore Abdi Bashir Jr. was named the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week Tuesday by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).

Bashir is the first Monmouth player ever to receive this honor.

Bashir set his career-high twice in one week, breaking the program's single-game record for three pointers made with 10 at Rutgers.

He netted 38 points at RU, the most for a Hawk in seven years and second most in a game under King Rice.

It was the most by a Rutgers opponent since 1977 and second most threes ever in Jersey Mike's Arena.

He started the week with a 25-point night at Northern Illinois, and finished the week with 12 triples and a perfect 11-11 from the foul line.

No Hawk has ever won this weekly award, named for legendary Oscar Robertson.

Since the 1958-59 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson.

It is the nation's oldest award and the only one named after a former player.

At the conclusion of the regular season, the USBWA will name finalists for the award, which is voted on by the entire membership.

The winner of the award will be announced at the 2025 Men's Final Four in San Antonio, Texas, with the formal presentation to follow at the annual USBWA Awards Luncheon hosted by the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.

Bashir and the Hawks are back in action Thursday, beginning play in the Axe 'Em Classic against Youngstown State.
