Ghana's Black Maidens held their nerve in a 5-4 shootout win over Argentina and now meet Japan for a U-17 Women's World Cup semi-final spot.
Ghana's Black Maidens are into the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, and they did it the hard way. A 5-4 penalty shootout win over Argentina at the Mohammed VI Sports Complex on Wednesday sent the young Africans through to the last eight.
The Round of 16 tie finished 1-1 after regulation time, with Ghana digging deep to stay level before the shootout. From the spot, the Black Maidens kept their composure and edged a tense contest to keep their World Cup dream alive.
Standing in their way now is Japan, who booked their own quarter-final place with a 3-1 win over Kenya in their Round of 16 clash on Thursday. The two sides meet on Sunday, with kick-off set for 15:00 GMT and a spot in the semi-finals up for grabs.
Ghana's start to the tournament was far from smooth, but head coach Joe Nana Adarkwa and his squad have found their rhythm at the right time. Momentum is on their side, and the belief is clearly growing.
With one more win, the Black Maidens would move into the final four and keep chasing a strong finish on the global stage. Sunday is a big test, and Ghana will want to make the most of it.
