Ghana's Black Meteors start camp on 12 October with 32 players, a Libya showdown looming and the road to the 2028 Olympics at stake.
Ghana's Black Meteors are back at work. The U-23 side returns to camp on Monday, 12 October, with the CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya next month and a path toward the 2028 Olympic stage in sight.
Head coach Desmond Ofei is expected to welcome 32 players to the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram. Six foreign-based players are also due to link up before the two-legged tie, adding extra depth to the group. Ofei and his technical team will trim the squad as the build-up continues.
Locally based players are set to stay in camp until the qualifiers, though clubs can request their release each week so those players can feature in Ghana league fixtures. It is a balancing act between club and country, and the coaching staff will need to manage it carefully.
The tie will be played in the 9-17 November international window. Ghana start away in Libya and finish with the return leg at home. The aggregate winners move into the final qualifying round, where Equatorial Guinea U-23 or Niger U-23 will be waiting.
It is a three-round process to decide which seven nations join hosts Egypt at the eight-team finals. For Ghana, getting through is about more than a tournament berth. It would keep alive the dream of bringing a new generation of Black Meteors onto the Olympic stage.
