Ghana's Black Queens captain Portia Boakye is among the continent's elite after a CAF Women's Player of the Year nomination following her WAFCON run.
Ghana has another reason to celebrate on the continental stage. Black Queens captain Portia Boakye has been nominated for the 2026 CAF Women's Player of the Year award, a reward for her leadership and contribution at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations.
Boakye featured in five matches at the tournament and chipped in with an assist as Ghana pushed through to the quarter-finals. Her influence went beyond the numbers, as she anchored the team's efforts and carried the armband with authority.
She is not the only Ghanaian on the list. Goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan has also been recognised, in the Goalkeeper of the Year category, after a series of standout displays between the posts at WAFCON. Together, the pair are the only two Black Queens to make the cut for individual honours this year.
The competition for Boakye is fierce. Zambia's Barbra Banda, South Africa's Thembi Kgatlana, Cameroonian duo Marie Ngah Manga and Monique Ngock, Morocco's Hanane Ait El Haj and Algeria's Marine Dafeur are all in the mix. Malawi also has two names in contention, with Tabitha Chawinga and Temwa Chawinga both nominated.
The winners will be revealed at the 2026 CAF Awards, scheduled for Monday, December 7, 2026, a night celebrating the best of African football. For Boakye and Konlan, just being in this company is a proud moment for Ghana's women's game.
