Chelsea loanee Genesis Antwi gets his maiden Sweden senior call, and the door to the Black Stars is now almost shut.
Another player of Ghanaian descent is heading toward senior international football in the colours of a European nation. Swedish-born defender Genesis Antwi, 19, has received his first senior call-up from Sweden, and the Black Stars look set to miss out.
The Chelsea youngster is on loan at Ligue 1 side Racing Strasbourg, where he has made eight league appearances this season. Those outings caught the attention of Sweden boss Graham Potter, who has rewarded the teenager with a place in the squad. Strasbourg teammate Seb Nanasi is in the group too.
Antwi arrives in camp full of confidence. If he impresses in training, he could make his senior debut in the November window, when Sweden play two UEFA Nations League games: Bosnia and Herzegovina in Stockholm on November 14, then Poland in Wroclaw on November 17.
Antwi has represented both England and Sweden at youth level, so Ghana were never completely out of the picture. In theory he could still switch allegiance to the Black Stars. But a senior Sweden call-up makes that very unlikely, and another talented player from the Ghanaian diaspora looks lost to the Black Stars.
