Ghana's young stars topped their group unbeaten, but a 1-0 semi-final loss to Ivory Coast has shut them out of Morocco 2027.
Ghana's youth pipeline has taken a painful blow. The Black Starlets will not be at the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after Ivory Coast edged them 1-0 in the semi-final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
It is a bitter outcome for a side that looked the part for most of the tournament. Ghana went through Group A without a defeat, collecting seven points from three games. They ground out a 1-0 win over Togo, then hit Benin for a 3-1 victory, and finished with a goalless draw against hosts Burkina Faso to claim top spot.
Ivory Coast had a tougher road. They finished second in Group B after a 1-1 draw with Nigeria, but they turned up when it mattered most and found the one goal that decided the contest at the 4th August Stadium.
Head coach Kassim Ocansey had stressed before kickoff how big the semi-final was, even calling it more important than the final because of what was on the line: a ticket to the continental stage. That ticket now goes elsewhere.
For Ghana, a nation that prides itself on producing world-class young talent, missing a major youth tournament stings. The Black Starlets now face questions about how a group-stage table-topper ended up watching the continental showpiece from home.
