Ghana centre-back Nicholas Opoku must win over a new boss after Las Palmas named Albert Sánchez head coach on a deal running to 2028.
Ghana defender Nicholas Opoku now has a new manager to impress at UD Las Palmas. The Segunda División club have appointed Albert Sánchez as head coach, and the Black Stars centre-back must adapt quickly to the new regime.
The Spanish second-tier side confirmed the news on Thursday. Sánchez, a 39-year-old Catalan born in Esplugues de Llobregat, Barcelona, has signed a contract that runs until June 30, 2028. In an official statement, the club welcomed him and wished him every success in his new role leading the Yellows.
The timing makes things interesting for Opoku. The 29-year-old joined Las Palmas in August and made his debut on Tuesday in the Copa del Rey win over RSD Alcalá. Just as he begins to settle in, the man who picks the team has changed.
A new coach means a clean slate for everyone in the squad. Opoku will have to show Sánchez what he offers at the back, from his defensive work to his leadership, if he wants to turn that cup debut into a regular starting role. Ghana fans will be watching closely to see how their man handles the challenge in Spain.
