Sports Minister Sounds Alarm as Black Stars' AFCON Qualifying Nightmare Deepens

Two defeats, zero points and no head coach: Ghana's Sports Minister says the Black Stars' problems run deeper than results.

Ghana's government has weighed in on the Black Stars' troubled start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Sports Minister Kofi Adams admits he is deeply worried about where the four-time African champions are heading.

The numbers make for grim reading. Ghana opened Group C with a 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast in Bouaké, then fell 4-2 to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium. That leaves them bottom of the table with no points, and the pressure is already huge on a proud football nation.

Things off the pitch have been just as turbulent. Head coach Carlos Queiroz has stepped down after the poor start, leaving the national team without a permanent boss at a critical moment.

Speaking on TV3, Adams argued the trouble goes beyond two bad results. In his view, Ghana's football problems are structural, tied to questions of leadership and the development of talent. The minister, who is also the MP for Buem, suggested that a quick fix on matchday will not solve them.

The Black Stars will regroup next month for a double-header against Somalia in Matchdays Three and Four. An interim technical team named by the Ghana Football Association will take charge while the search for a new head coach continues. With the campaign already on the line, those two games could decide whether Ghana revive their qualifying hopes or slip further toward crisis.
