Tim Jeal, who doubted the 'Dr Livingstone, I presume?' line, dies at 81

The biographer who reshaped how we see Stanley, Livingstone and Baden-Powell has died, leaving a rewritten story of Africa's most famous meeting.

On the shores of Lake Tanganyika, in Ujiji in present-day Tanzania, one of history's most quoted moments supposedly took place. Tim Jeal, the biographer and novelist who has died aged 81, spent his career picking apart that story and the myths around it, and he concluded that the famous greeting was almost certainly never spoken.

The scene dates to November 1871. Welsh-American journalist and adventurer Henry Morton Stanley completed a roughly 700-mile expedition to find David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary and explorer. Livingstone had been out of contact with the wider world for six years and was nearing the end of his life. Stanley's reported words, "Dr Livingstone, I presume?", became shorthand for stiff-upper-lip understatement. Jeal's research suggested the polished line was more legend than record.

Debunking that sentence was only part of Jeal's legacy. His biographies challenged long-held assumptions about Stanley and Livingstone, and also about Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scout movement, along with other European figures active across Africa. He treated reputations as things to be tested against evidence, not inherited.

For readers in Africa and the diaspora, that approach matters. The continent's colonial-era story has often been told through the legends of the outsiders who passed through it. Jeal's work pushed readers to ask who shaped those legends, what was left out, and why. His death at 81 closes a long career, but the questions he raised remain open.
