Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the 2022 runner-up, has withdrawn from the US Open, the last of the four major tennis tournaments that begins on Monday at Flushing Meadows in New York, due to injury, organizers announced on Thursday.
The world No. 17, who finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek at the 2022 US Open, has withdrawn from this year’s tournament to prioritize her fitness and recover from a shoulder injury.
She had already missed the Paris Olympics and Washington tournament for the same reasons. After a brief return to competition at the Toronto 1000 tournament, where she lost to Naomi Osaka in the first round, she skipped the Cincinnati 1000 tournament last week.
Following her withdrawal from Flushing Meadows, Belgian Elise Mertens took her place in the main draw, with a qualifier filling Mertens’ original spot.
