Ola Great, a Nigerian amateur footballer, has secured a trial opportunity with Spanish club Sevilla FC after a social media campaign garnered over 100,000 reposts.
The player had, on Monday, tweeted Sevilla’s X account, asking the club the number of reposts that would get him a chance to try out with Sevilla, and the seven-time UEFA Europa League champions responded by setting a 100,000 target for him.
Ola immediately jumped into action, and the post quickly went viral on X, thanks to the efforts of thousands of netizens, including influencers, who subsequently amplified the reach of the post.
Just a little over 24 hours later on Tuesday, Ola had amassed more than 100,000 reposts on the post, exceeding the number of reposts requested for a tryout at the club.
Over 139,000 people have reposted the post at the time of filing this report.
“Thank you to everyone that made this happen; thank you, Twitter NG, for this,” Ola said in an appreciation post shortly after completing the task. “My heart is full of so many emotions right now,” he stated.
Sevilla has acknowledged fulfilment of the task by responding to the post with a link to last year’s club’s statement announcing the creation of a new team mainly for foreign players who are 18 years old and above.
The statement said, “Sevilla FC will have a new team within its competitive structure. It will be a squad with a strong international dimension and will compete in the Tecera Andaluza, in the ninth tier of Spanish football.”
Meanwhile, some netizens have voiced their displeasure with the response and subsequently requested Sevilla to speak solely on Ola’s target.
