Natalie Portman, Serena Williams and other powerful women are planning on launching a women’s soccer team in Los Angeles.
They are currently working with the National Women’s Soccer League to establish the city’s first pro team by the year 2022.
TMZ reports that multiple award-winning American actress Eva Longoria is also teaming up with them to bring the idea to fruition.
“Today we take an exciting step by announcing the first women majority-owned and led ownership group,” said Portman.
“I am thrilled by the opportunity to partner with this incredible group of people to bring a professional women’s soccer team to Los Angeles.”
The National Women’s Soccer League has only nine teams, spread across the cities of Portland, Orlando, Tacoma and others.
Despite having a heavy fan base of soccer fanatics, Los Angeles doesn’t yet have any women’s soccer team.
This group of super powerful women, who call themselves Angel City, are therefore looking to take advantage of the heavy fan demand.
The lead investors in the project are Portman, technology mogul Kara Nortman, gaming entrepreneur Julie Uhrman and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.
Ohanian is the husband of Serena Williams, with the tennis star also part of a smaller investment group affiliated with the Angel City group.
Others are Jessica Chastain, America Ferrera, Jennifer Garner, Uzo Aduba andLilly Singh, as well as soccer legends Abby Wambach, Julie Foudy, Mia Hamm, Shannon Boxx.
“Together, we aim to build not only a winning team on the field, but also to develop a passionately loyal fan base. We also hope to make a substantive impact on our community, committing to extending access to sports for young people in Los Angeles through our relationship with the LA84 Foundation,” Portman noted.
“Sports are such a joyful way to bring people together, and this has the power to make tangible change for female athletes both in our community and in the professional sphere.”
