Ghana sit bottom of Group C with zero points, but ex-GFA vice-president George Afriyie insists the road to AFCON 2027 is far from closed.
Ghana's Black Stars are staring at a crisis, yet one of the country's football figures refuses to write them off. Former GFA vice-president George Afriyie says qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations is still very much on, despite a nightmare start to Group C.
The damage so far is painful. Ghana opened with a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in Bouaké, then suffered a heartbreaking 4-2 home loss to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium, a game in which they had built a two-goal lead. That leaves the four-time continental champions pointless at the foot of the table.
Afriyie, speaking on Sporty FM, argued that the campaign is far from finished. His message was simple: pick the strongest possible squad for every remaining fixture and treat each match as a must-win. Because the qualifiers run in a league format, he believes a string of victories can still lift Ghana back into contention.
The chance to start that recovery comes next month, when the Black Stars host Somalia in a doubleheader in Accra. After that, the schedule turns brutal: a home rematch with Ivory Coast, then a final-day trip to face The Gambia. Ghana will need maximum points and a major improvement in game management to turn the tide and keep their AFCON 2027 hopes alive.
