Ghana's Black Meteors have landed in Libya, and Wednesday's first leg in Benghazi could shape their road to the 2027 U-23 AFCON.
Ghana's Black Meteors have arrived in Libya with one mission: take a big step toward the 2027 CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations. Head coach Desmond Ofei and his squad landed at Benina International Airport in Benghazi on Sunday, and the preparations are now in full swing.
The first leg of the second preliminary round against Libya is set for Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at the Benghazi International Stadium. Kick-off is 7pm local time, which is 5pm in Ghana. Ofei's men will want a positive result on Libyan soil before the return leg back home.
The stakes are simple. Win over the two legs and Ghana move on, with Equatorial Guinea or Niger waiting in the next round. Ghana skipped the first round of the three-stage qualifying series thanks to a bye, so this is their real opening test. Seven teams will join hosts Egypt at the eight-team finals.
There is also a bigger story behind the tie. Ghana last appeared in Olympic men's football at the 2004 Athens Games, so every step on this road carries extra meaning for a young generation chasing a long-awaited return to the global stage. First, though, they have to get through Benghazi.
