Ghana's U-15 boys finished seventh among 189 nations at the FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival, and coach Salifu Fatawu is proud of the fight.
Ghana's next generation just put African youth football on the global map. The Black Starlets-in-the-making finished seventh out of 189 countries at the FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival in Azerbaijan, a result that speaks volumes about the continent's development pathway.
The campaign was built on consistency. Ghana won eight of their 10 matches and closed the tournament in style with a 4-0 win over Colombia. There was a painful moment along the way, a 7-1 loss to Brazil in the Tier A Ranking Play-Offs, but the young Ghanaians bounced back rather than let it define their run.
Head coach Salifu Fatawu said he is very excited and happy with what his squad delivered, especially given the preparation they had back home. He pointed to the heavy schedule and the intensity of the games, and praised the players for coping with both and lifting Ghana into the top seven.
Still, the ambition was bigger. Fatawu admitted the group arrived with the mindset of winning the trophy, which would have been a first for Ghana, and that dream did not come to pass. But finishing among the best in a field of 189 nations is a serious marker, and a reminder that the talent pipeline in Ghana, and across Africa, keeps producing players ready to compete with the world's best.
