South Africa are 102 for four chasing 421 in Durban, and Aiden Markram's unbeaten 45 is the Proteas' main hope of survival on the final day.
Durban is where South Africa's hopes now hang by a thread. Australia's Matt Renshaw has dragged the first Test his way, and the Proteas must chase 421 on a final day that looks daunting.
Renshaw's story is wild. He returned to the Test side with a single innings, edged to slip for eight, then flew to South Africa to find his role changed from opener to number five. He answered with a brilliant 190 across the first two days, rescuing Australia when they needed it most.
He wasn't finished. On day four, Renshaw top-scored again with 82, powering Australia to a declaration at 316 for six and setting the hosts a huge target of 421. The visitors then struck quickly, reducing South Africa to 102 for four by stumps.
Aiden Markram is the man standing in Australia's way. Unbeaten on 45, the opener has to anchor the chase and find partners willing to fight if the Proteas are to avoid going a Test down. Australia need only a few more breakthroughs to take a series lead, so the final day promises plenty of tension in Durban.
