Rivers Hoopers Make History, Advance to BAL Semifinals

Share

Rivers Hoopers became the first Nigerian team to reach the Basketball Africa League (BAL) semifinals, defeating former champions US Monastir 92-88.

Led by Coach Ogoh Odaudu, the Rivers Hoopers demonstrated unwavering determination and teamwork, fighting for every possession and leaving everything on the court. Their hard work and dedication paid off, as they outlasted the Tunisian champions to secure a spot in the semifinals.

The team's journey to this stage has been remarkable, from finishing 1-2 in the inaugural BAL season to missing the next two seasons and returning stronger than ever.

Coach Odaudu had declared their intention to make history at the start of the 2024 BAL season, and they have done just that.

The Rivers Hoopers will face Libya's Al Ahly Ly in the semifinals on May 29, and the team is eager to continue their winning streak.

As Devine Eke, who scored 16 points and 12 rebounds, said, "This win means a lot to us as a country... We are here to compete... This is a big victory, not just for the club, but the job is not done. We still have a lot more work to do."

Will Perry, who finished with a game-high 33 points and 5 assists, echoed the team's determination, saying, "This team is built to compete... We were super focused... Our offense took over."

Team manager Ifie Ozaka, the mastermind behind the team's rebuilding, expressed his pride and gratitude, stating, "It's been an amazing journey... We went back and prepared... We knew the kind of players we wanted on and off court... This success is a team effort."
