Former NBA star Michael Jordan and Brand Jordan are set to donate $100 million towards the global fight against racial injustice.
The donation was announced in a joint statement published on Friday, June 5, 2020.
The statement said the $100 million will be donated across 10 years to organisations dedicated to fighting for “racial equality, social justice, and greater access to education.”
It comes in the wake of George Floyd’s death. Floyd, an unarmed black man, was killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis.
“Black lives matter. This isn’t a controversial statement. Until the ingrained racism that allows our country’s institutions to fail is completely eradicated, we will remain committed to protecting and improving the lives of Black people,” a section of the statement from Jordan Brand said.
It added: “We represent a proud family that has overcome obstacles, fought against discrimination in communities worldwide, and that works every day to erase the stain of racism and the damage of injustice.
“The will, the work, the excellence the world has come to know is the result of one generation after another, pouring their dreams into the next.”
MJ has been one of the most vocal persons against racial injustice since the murder of Floyd.
In an early statement in May, Jordan said he stands with those calling out the ingrained racism and violence toward people of color in the US.
