Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams top list of highest-earning sportswomen

Naomi and Serena

World Tennis Association star Naomi Osaka has been rated as the highest earning sportswoman in the world.

She is closely followed by tennis rival Serena Williams, a research by US business magazine Forbes, has revealed.

Tennis players have topped the rich list for years, with nine women involved in the sport leading the highest-earning sportswomen list for the past year.

Osaka is the highest earner with $37.4m (£26.3m) in the past year, while Serena Williams earned $36m (£27.2m).

In third-place is Ashleigh Barty with an income of $13.1m (£9.9m), with USWNT player Alex Morgan being the only athlete from outside tennis in the top 10.

Morgan has an income of $4.6m (£3.5m), which came through endorsements, as she birthed her first child in May.

Meanwhile, Osaka and Williams have both broken the previous record for annual earnings by a female athlete.

The previous record was held by Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova, whose income was $29.7m (£22.3m) in 2015.

Forbes calculated the income of the sportswomen for the year under review, starting 1 June 2019 to 1 June 2020.
