Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei has died after she was set on fire in a horrific “domestic” attack, it was announced on Thursday.
The Ugandan athlete and mother-of-two, 33, suffered 75 per cent burns in the suspected petrol attack in Kenyaon Sunday.
She spent days in a critical condition at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, in western Kenya.
Cheptegei finished 44th in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympic Games.
The Uganda Athletics Federation announced the runner’s death in a statement on social media on Thursday morning.
It read: “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence.
“As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest In Peace.”
Cheptegei’s daughters are understood to be aged nine and 11.
