Real Madrid star Marcelo is the latest sports star to display his support for the Black Lives Matter movement while celebrating his goal against Eibar in La Liga on Sunday.
The left-full back scored Real Madrid’s third goal inside 37 minutes on Sunday evening after latching onto a rebound after Eden Hazard was denied in front of goal.
And after putting Madrid in complete control in first half, the Brazilian veteran channeled his inner Colin Kaepernick and Tommie Smith, taking a knee and raising his left fist to the heavens:
Protests around the world following the death of George Floyd in America have resulted in the publicity of the Black Lives Matter movement, with football clubs and players using their platform to speak out against racial inequality and police brutality.
Floyd died in police custody this week and a video of his arrest – which has gone viral on social media showing a 44-year-old white officer, Derek Chauvin, subdued Floyd by placing his knee on his neck for a prolonged period until Floyd was rendered motionlessness.
The officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck, as Floyd pleaded “I can’t breathe”, has since been arrested and is facing murder and manslaughter charges.
Several stars from the world of football, like Jadon Sancho, Achram Hakimi and Marcus Thuram, have shown solidarity over the past couple of weeks and produced similar gestures in solidarity after scoring in Bundesliga.
