NBA stars LeBron James and Kevin Durant couldn’t resist having their say after Washington’s NFL team announced its name change.
The franchise said it was dropped the name “Redskins” and would now prefer to be referred to as “Washington Football Team”.
The name change became necessary after Native Americans took offence of “Redskins” and some sponsors also threatened to pull out.
A statement from the club said it will use its newly-adopted name during the 2020 NFL season.
“Starting tomorrow and over the next 50 days, we will begin the process of retiring all Redskins branding from team properties,” it said.
“We encourage fans, media and all other parties to use ‘Washington Football Team’ immediately.”
Durant, who is a Washington fan, was involved in a little banter with LeBron over the team’s name change.
“Just waking back up from my pregame nap to see about The Washington Football team??? Is that real?? No way! Oh man they had a thorough intense long board meeting about that one huh,” James tweeted as he made fun of the club.
Durant replied with a surprised emoji, before James again tweeted: “Yo I was going to check on you but figured you didn’t wanna be bothered at the moment.”
Responding to his fellow NBA star’s banter, KD wrote “WE BACK!!” accompanied by laughing emojis.
