Romelu Lukaku becomes first player to score in nine consecutive Europa League games

Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku has become the first footballer to score in nine successive matches in the Europa League.

The Belgian scored the second goal as Antonio Conte’s side beat Bayer Leverkusen to reach the semi-final of the competition.

Midfielder Nicolo Barella had given Inter an early lead, before Lukaku ensured that Kai Havertz strike would end up as only consolation for Leverkusen.

Lukaku’s goal against the German side has made him the first footballer to ever score in nine Uefa Cup or Europa League matches in a row.

The run, however, includes his time with Premier League side Everton, where he scored in five successive games in the competition.

“We are growing but we have to learn to kill games off when we have the chances to do it, and we didn’t tonight,” the 27-year-old said after the game.

“Now we have time to recover physically and prepare for another great game. We will have to be ready.”

Lukaku has now netted 31 times this season, making him Inter’s top scorer in a season since Samuel Eto’o in 2010-11.
