Barcelona have announced that the club has parted ways with Eric Abidal as Technical Manager after terminating his contract.
The Spanish side is looking to rebuild following a disappointing season that saw them end the campaign without any trophy.
On Monday, head coach Quique Setien was the first to be sacked after that 8-2 humiliating defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in the quarter-final of the Champions League.
Abidal will now follow Setien out of the door, with club President Josep Maria Bartomeu also under pressure to resign.
Abidal came under the spotlight some months ago after he criticised the Barcelona players for “not doing much work”.
The former French full-back was, however, called out by captain Lionel Messi, who was displeased with his comments.
“FC Barcelona and Eric Abidal have reached an agreement for the termination of the contract binding both parties,” a statement announcing Abidal’s sacking said.
“The club publicly expresses its gratitude to Eric Abidal for the professionalism, commitment, dedication and positive and close treatment towards all the areas that make up the Barca family, and wishes him luck and success in the future.”
