Dutch-born Ghanaian Tyrone Owusu struck from range, but Telstar lost a seven-goal Eredivisie thriller 4-3 to Feyenoord at the BUKO Stadion.
Dutch-born Ghanaian forward Tyrone Owusu is making noise in the Eredivisie. He scored a superb long-range goal for SC Telstar on Saturday, though it wasn't enough to stop a 4-3 defeat to Feyenoord at the BUKO Stadion. It was another reminder of the diaspora talent lighting up European football.
Telstar were rocked early. Mali international winger Gaoussou Diarra put Feyenoord ahead inside the opening minute, and Spaniard Nacho doubled the lead in the 21st minute. Two goals down, the hosts needed a response.
Owusu delivered it. Set up by Noach Shenkman, the Ghanaian forward stepped up and beat Feyenoord goalkeeper Tjark Ernst with a clean finish from outside the box, putting Telstar back in the contest.
The match stayed wild. Sem Steijn restored Feyenoord's two-goal cushion in the 32nd minute, but Patrick Brouwer pulled one back before the break to make it 3-2. Steijn then converted a penalty after the restart to make it 4-2. Telstar kept pushing, and Shenkman found the net to set up a tense finish, but Feyenoord held on for the 4-3 win.
The result went the visitors' way, but Owusu's goal was the highlight for Telstar and a moment worth watching for anyone tracking Ghanaian-heritage players in Europe.
