Ghana's only unbeaten side travel to Samreboi on Sunday as champions Medeama meet a wounded Samartex in a derby with title-race stakes.
Ghana Premier League champions Medeama SC head into one of the toughest assignments of their title defence on Sunday, when they travel to Samreboi to face FC Samartex 1996 in the Western derby at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena. After six matches, the Mauve and Yellow are the only team in the division yet to taste defeat.
Medeama have 14 points from six games and the league's best attack with 12 goals, though they have also conceded five. Last weekend's 3-1 home win over Heart of Lions strengthened their grip on top spot, and they arrive with four wins and a draw in their last five outings. They have also travelled well, taking one win and two draws from three away games and scoring in every one of them.
Samartex, though, will be hungry to bounce back. The Timber Giants suffered their first loss of the season, a narrow 1-0 defeat to newly promoted FC Ashanti Gold, and now sit third on 11 points, three behind Medeama. Home comfort could help: they have won two and drawn one of their opening three matches in Samreboi.
With bragging rights in the west and a chance to either extend or cut into the gap at the top, this derby has plenty riding on it. Medeama's firepower against a Samartex side desperate to protect home turf makes this one to watch.
