Abdul Latif Wunzalgu pulled the strings as Ghana's Black Starlets beat Togo 1-0 to kick off their WAFU Zone B U-17 campaign in style.
West Africa's next generation of football talent has a new name to watch. Ghana's Abdul Latif Wunzalgu earned Man of the Match honours as the Black Starlets opened their 2026 WAFU Zone B U-17 Championship with a 1-0 win over Togo in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The playmaker was the heartbeat of Ghana's attack on Saturday at the August 4 Sports Stadium, driving the side forward in their opening Group A fixture. His movement and delivery kept Togo under pressure and gave the young Ghanaians a constant creative outlet.
It took just seven minutes for the breakthrough. A rehearsed free-kick routine involving Wunzalgu was first blocked, but captain Abdul Rafiu Issah reacted sharply to follow up. The ball then dropped to David Kwarteng, who finished the move to put Ghana in front early.
The Black Starlets spurned several chances to double their lead, and Wunzalgu kept probing as Togo struggled to handle Ghana's attacking threat. The second goal never arrived, but Ghana managed the rest of the contest with maturity beyond their years to protect the narrow advantage.
The three points send Ghana to the top of Group A, giving them an ideal platform as the tournament unfolds. If Wunzalgu keeps pulling the strings like this, the Black Starlets will be a tough side for anyone to stop.
