Egyptian Football Association upholds ban on foreign goalkeepers

The Egyptian Football Association has extended the ban on signing foreign goalkeepers across all domestic leagues in the country.

The EFA and clubs’ representatives had tentatively agreed in late January on a proposal to lift the ban on signing foreign goalkeepers but the attempt was immediately met with criticism in the media and experts.

The move came after former Egypt coach Hassan Shehata lamented the lack of quality goalkeepers in the country.

The EFA also announced on Sunday the number of players clubs are allowed to register in the comimg season 2021/22.

“Each team will be able to register 30 players in all divisions,” read a statement by the EFA.

“In the Premier League — the first division league — every club will be allowed to register up to five foreign players, while Palestinian players would be teated as Egyptians with a maximum of only one Palestinian player for every club,” the statement added.

On 25 January, the EFA announced after a meeting with club representatives of the topflight football league that each club will register five foreign players in their squad for the coming 2021/22 season.

Clubs were allowed to register four foreign players this season, with each team also allowed to register an additional fifth player from the following nationalities only: Palestinian, Syrian, Tunisian, Moroccan, Algerian, or Libyan.
