Newly promoted Premier League side Coventry City have completed the signing of Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi from FC Nordsjaelland in a deal that sets new records for both parties.
The Sky Blues confirmed the arrival of the 20-year-old on Friday, with the transfer worth an initial €27 million, which could rise to €30 million once performance-related add-ons are factored in.
It is comfortably the largest transfer fee Coventry City have ever paid and the fourth time they have broken their own record this summer window.
It is also the largest fee ever received by any club in Scandinavian football, surpassing the €25 million Nordsjaelland themselves collected when they sold Ernest Nuamah to Lyon in 2023.
Yirenkyi has signed a long-term contract in the West Midlands and will link up with Frank Lampard’s squad ahead of the club’s return to the Premier League.
The midfielder’s ascent has been rapid. Born in Bechem, Ghana, on January 15th, 2006, Yirenkyi came through the Right to Dream Academy before moving to Farum in mid-2024 to join Nordsjaelland.
He made his senior debut for the Danish Superliga side in September 2024 against Viborg FF and was permanently promoted to the first team in February 2025.
Across his time in Denmark, he made 56 senior appearances, scoring four goals and providing eight assists, and was named the Danish Superliga Young Player of the Year for the 2025/26 season as Nordsjaelland finished third and qualified for the UEFA Conference League.
FC Nordsjaelland football director Alexander Riget had earmarked Yirenkyi for a summer exit as far back as December, telling Danish media that the player was ready to move directly to a top-five league without needing an intermediate step in another league system.
Coventry, and Lampard specifically, are understood to have been aggressive in the negotiations. The Sky Blues head coach, who signed a new contract until 2029 at the end of June, is understood to have identified Yirenkyi as a priority summer target and personally engaged in the recruitment process.
It is no surprise that in his first interview after joining the English club, the midfielder revealed he is looking forward to working under Lampard.
“When I spoke to the Head Coach about the plans and the style, it’s something I really like, and I look forward to learning from him.
“I want to give my best to the team each and every day. I’m still young so I want to learn from the Head Coach, the other players and work really hard for the team," he added.
Reports from Denmark suggest Yirenkyi himself chose the Coventry project over other options, attracted by the guarantee of a central role in Lampard’s squad and regular playing time in the Premier League.
The Ghanaian international arrives in England on the back of a defining international summer. Yirenkyi scored against Wales in a pre-World Cup friendly, before scoring a stoppage-time winner in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Panama in Toronto.
He featured in all four of Ghana’s matches in the United States and Canada as the Black Stars reached the round of 32.
His signing continues a busy summer at the Coventry Building Society Arena, with Yirenkyi becoming the fourth Sky Blues recruit to break the club’s all-time transfer record in the space of weeks, following the earlier arrivals of Aurele Amenda (£17.1 million from Eintracht Frankfurt), Loum Tchaouna (£20 million from Burnley) and goalkeeper Carl Rushworth (£22.1 million from Brighton).
Coventry return to the Premier League campaign for the first time in 25 years and will face reigning champions Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on August 21st in their first game.
