Ghana's U17s got off to a winning start at the WAFU Zone B Championship, but coach Kassim Ocansey wants far more bite in front of goal.
Ghana's Black Starlets have opened their WAFU Zone B U17 Championship campaign with three points, but head coach Kassim Ocansey is already demanding more from his young attackers after a 1-0 win over Togo in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
David Kwarteng provided the decisive moment in the 7th minute, giving Ghana an early lead in their Group A opener. That was the only goal of the game, and the Starlets could not turn their promising play into a more comfortable scoreline.
Ocansey was pleased with the result but not with the finishing. "We won, but I expected more from my boys," he said after the match. He explained that his side created good openings but failed to convert enough of them, adding that while he was happy with the three points, they could have done better with the chances they made.
The coach believes the quality is there. If the team sharpens up in the final third, he argues, three or four goals a game is a realistic target. Ocansey says the squad will work on its finishing in training before the next fixture, as Ghana look to build on a winning start and make a statement in the tournament.
